Ghaziabad: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday handed over the key to the first flat built under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U) in Ghaziabad, marking the city’s first home possession under the affordable housing scheme launched in 2015.
The handover took place during a public event in Ghaziabad and signals the beginning of possession for hundreds of eligible beneficiaries waiting for affordable homes.
The first beneficiary to receive the key was Krishna Kumar, who was allotted a flat under the Madhuban Bapudham Housing Scheme developed by the Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA). Under PMAY-Urban, each flat costs around Rs 6 lakh, with financial assistance shared between the Centre (Rs 2.5 lakh), the Uttar Pradesh government (Rs 1 lakh), and the beneficiary (Rs 2.5 lakh).
The scheme is available to families with an annual income of less than Rs 4 lakh, making homeownership more accessible for economically weaker sections.
According to GDA officials, the project faced significant delays due to the late release of funds from the Central and State governments. Infrastructure works, including electricity and water supply by the power department and UP Jal Nigam, also took longer than expected. Officials said that after the Chief Minister’s formal handover, the authority will soon begin delivering possession of the remaining completed flats to eligible beneficiaries.
The move is expected to benefit hundreds of families waiting for affordable housing in Ghaziabad. GDA has already completed 856 flats in Madhuban Bapudham and 528 units in Newari, which are now ready for possession. However, construction of 2,112 flats across Dasna, Noor Nagar, and Pratap Vihar is still underway. The handover is also seen as a major step in accelerating the implementation of PMAY-Urban in the district.
Apart from distributing house keys, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for 90 development projects worth Rs 868 crore. Among the key projects is the Rs 125-crore Hapur Chungi Flyover, a four-lane, 1.2-km structure designed to ease chronic traffic congestion near the busy intersection connecting Kavinagar, RNE, the DM office, and Police Line.
He also launched the foundation for a multi-level parking facility at Rajnagar District Centre, which will be developed under the Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) model through a public-private partnership. Other announced infrastructure works include new roundabouts, the Northern Peripheral Road, and Hum-Tum Road, which will strengthen Ghaziabad’s road connectivity with Meerut.
