Target of 1 crore solar homes by FY 2026–27
India has achieved another significant milestone in its renewable energy journey, with more than 25 lakh households now equipped with rooftop solar systems under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi announced on Sunday.
Sharing the update on social media, the minister said the scheme is helping families shift to cleaner power while also delivering noticeable reductions in electricity bills. He credited the progress to the government’s focus on expanding renewable energy access at the household level.
According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), the scheme offers central financial assistance of up to ₹78,000 to eligible households for installing rooftop solar plants, making clean energy more affordable and accessible across urban and rural areas.
Launched in February 2024, the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana aims to install rooftop solar systems in one crore households by FY 2026–27. The programme has a total outlay of ₹75,021 crore and is designed to reduce dependence on conventional power sources, cut household electricity expenses, and support India’s broader climate and sustainability goals.
Government officials say the rapid uptake of rooftop solar reflects growing public awareness about renewable energy benefits, including long-term cost savings and energy independence. With installations continuing to rise, the scheme is expected to play a key role in strengthening India’s clean energy infrastructure over the coming years.
