Ajnara Homes Basement Flooded; ₹50 Lakh Penalty by Greater Noida Authority
After sewer water inundated basement areas at Ajnara Homes, authorities imposed a ₹50 lakh environmental penalty, citing long-term STP failure and untreated sewage discharge, triggering wider inspections across Greater Noida West.

STP reportedly non-functional for nearly two years
-
Basement water levels crossed 400 mm in multiple blocks
-
₹50 lakh environmental compensation plus additional penalties imposed
Greater Noida West: Greater Noida Authority has imposed a ₹50 lakh environmental compensation on Ajnara Homes after sewer water was found accumulated in the society’s basement areas.
The action followed multiple complaints from residents about persistent foul odour and waterlogging in parking and common spaces. During a site inspection, officials discovered that sewage had entered basement levels due to the prolonged failure of the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) and improper disposal of wastewater.
STP Found Non-Operational, Untreated Sewage Released
According to authority officials, the residential complex continued to generate nearly 1.15 million litres of sewage daily, despite its STP reportedly remaining non-functional for close to two years. Instead of being treated on-site, untreated wastewater was allegedly diverted directly into nearby stormwater drains.
Inspection teams noted that water levels in several basement blocks had exceeded 400 mm, severely disrupting parking facilities and raising concerns over hygiene, safety, and long-term structural damage. Authorities said this practice posed serious risks to public health and the surrounding environment.
Penalty Issued, Legal Action in Progress
Following the findings, the Authority served a formal notice to the builder and society management, imposing ₹50 lakh as environmental compensation along with an additional penalty of around ₹4 lakh. Officials also confirmed that steps are being taken to involve the police for further legal action.
Clear directions have been issued to restore STP operations immediately and ensure that no untreated sewage is discharged into public drains. Authorities warned that failure to comply could invite stricter action, including criminal proceedings.
Crackdown Expands Across Greater Noida West
The incident forms part of a broader enforcement drive underway across Greater Noida. So far, action has been initiated against 25 housing societies for similar violations, while notices have been served to over 220 builders and residential complexes seeking detailed reports on STP functionality. Inspections in dozens of projects have already revealed multiple lapses.
Officials reiterated that treated water from STPs must be reused for horticulture and construction activities, as mandated. Any society found releasing untreated sewage into public drains will face heavy financial penalties and possible prosecution.
Residents Seek Accountability
Residents have demanded strict action against those responsible, citing health hazards, damage to vehicles and property, and declining living conditions. Many also expressed concern over the potential long-term impact of repeated waterlogging on basement structures.
The Authority has assured residents that monitoring will continue and that non-compliant societies will be dealt with firmly to prevent further environmental violations and safeguard public welfare.
