Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, have purchased Strancally Castle, a historic Gothic Revival property in County Waterford, southeast Ireland. The acquisition was completed through an off-market deal several weeks ago, according to reports, and includes the castle and its expansive 440-acre estate along the River Blackwater.
The exact amount paid by the couple has not been disclosed and the transaction has not yet appeared on Ireland’s Property Price Register. However, The Irish Times has estimated that the property could have commanded between €20 million and €30 million, equivalent to approximately ₹223 crore to ₹335 crore. The estate is located around 200 km from Meta’s international headquarters in Ireland.
Built around 1830, Strancally Castle is a 19th-century Gothic-style residence overlooking the River Blackwater. The main house covers approximately 16,000 square feet and was designed on a grand scale by architects James and George Richard Pain for John Keily, a former member of Parliament.
The property extends across 440 acres of grassland and woodland and reaches the River Blackwater, giving the estate a secluded countryside setting. The castle was extensively restored after being acquired by financier Michael Alen-Buckley and his wife, Giancarla, who had owned the property for around 25 years.
Its scale is particularly notable. Historical accounts describe the residence as so large that it takes several minutes to walk between the kitchen and dining room. The estate also includes a private river setting and has undergone significant restoration to preserve the historic property.
A spokesperson for Zuckerberg said the family is looking forward to spending time in Ireland and continuing to care for the historic home.
“Mark and his family are excited to continue caring for this historic home and look forward to spending time in Ireland, where Meta maintains its international headquarters,” the spokesperson said.
The previous owners also welcomed the sale, saying they were pleased that the new owners intended to continue maintaining and improving the castle and its grounds after their long restoration effort.
The acquisition adds another major property to Zuckerberg and Chan’s growing real estate portfolio. Unlike a conventional primary residence, Strancally Castle is expected to serve mainly as a base when the family travels to Ireland.
The purchase also has a practical connection to Zuckerberg’s business interests. Meta has maintained its international headquarters in Ireland for years and employs around 1,500 people across its Irish operations.
The deal also places Zuckerberg among a growing group of wealthy international property owners with estates in the region. British billionaire James Dyson, for example, purchased nearby Ballynatray House in 2024.
Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan are expected to remain primarily based in the United States while using Strancally Castle during trips to Ireland. The family is also expected to continue investing in the upkeep of the historic estate, building on the restoration work carried out by the previous owners.
For now, the final sale price remains undisclosed. Once the transaction appears in Ireland’s official property records, further details about the deal may become available.
