New Delhi: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is planning to develop residential buildings above metro stations and maintenance depots as part of its property development strategy. The proposal aims to make better use of limited urban land while promoting transit-oriented development. If implemented, the initiative could significantly change how people live and travel in the national capital.

The proposed development will utilise the airspace above selected metro stations and depots to construct multi-storey residential buildings. The project is designed to reduce daily commuting time, encourage the use of public transport, and generate additional non-fare revenue for DMRC. It also addresses the growing demand for housing in Delhi, where land availability remains a major challenge.

According to DMRC, the buildings will be constructed using advanced engineering techniques that ensure metro operations remain unaffected. High-strength structural columns and vibration-resistant designs will support the residential towers while allowing trains to operate safely underneath.
