CBI Files 19th Chargesheet Against Earthcon Universal Infratech in Banker-Builder Nexus Case

The CBI has filed its 19th chargesheet in the alleged banker-builder nexus investigation, naming Earthcon Universal Infratech and its directors over alleged fraud involving Greater Noida homebuyers.

  • CBI names Earthcon Universal Infratech and its directors in the case.
  • The investigation relates to a housing project in Greater Noida.
  • The chargesheet alleges cheating, criminal conspiracy and breach of trust.

Greater Noida: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed its 19th chargesheet in the ongoing probe into the alleged banker-builder nexus, this time against Earthcon Universal Infratech Pvt. Ltd. and its directors in connection with a housing project in Greater Noida. The agency alleges that homebuyers and investors were induced to put money into the project through false assurances and misleading representations.

The chargesheet was filed before a Special CBI Court and forms part of a wider investigation involving 31 cases linked to an alleged nexus between builders and officials of financial institutions. The case is significant for Greater Noida homebuyers as the broader probe concerns allegations that thousands of buyers across different projects were allegedly subjected to deceptive practices and financial losses.

According to the CBI, the investigation found evidence suggesting that Earthcon Universal Infratech and its directors allegedly obtained financial benefits through illegal and deceptive means. The agency has alleged that prospective buyers and investors were persuaded through representations that were subsequently found to be fraudulent.

The accused have been charge-sheeted under relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including sections dealing with criminal conspiracy, cheating and criminal breach of trust, the agency said.

In its official statement, the CBI said its investigation had uncovered substantial evidence against the accused. The agency’s findings form part of its larger examination of alleged financial and criminal wrongdoing involving builder companies and unidentified officials of financial institutions.

The CBI has been conducting these investigations following directions from the Supreme Court, which led to cases being registered against several builder companies and unidentified financial institution officials across the country.

The latest chargesheet adds another development to the long-running legal scrutiny surrounding real estate projects connected with the alleged banker-builder nexus. For affected homebuyers, such investigations can potentially provide greater clarity on alleged financial irregularities and the parties involved.

However, filing a chargesheet represents the investigating agency’s allegations based on the evidence it says it has gathered; it is not, by itself, a finding of guilt by a court. The accused will have the opportunity to contest the allegations through the judicial process.

The case will now proceed before the Special CBI Court, where the allegations and evidence presented by the agency will be examined through the legal process. Further proceedings will determine how the charges against Earthcon Universal Infratech and its directors are dealt with by the court.

The latest action also indicates that the CBI’s broader investigation into the alleged banker-builder nexus remains active, with multiple cases involving builders and financial institutions continuing to move through the legal system.
