Greater Faridabad-Gurugram to Get 7-Km Double-Decker Elevated Road

• The proposed corridor will be around 7 km long and connect Greater Faridabad with the Gurugram Road side.
• Vehicles and Namo Bharat trains are planned to use separate levels of the same elevated structure.
• FMDA is also widening the Neelam-BK Road service lane to ease congestion around BK Chowk.

Faridabad: The Faridabad Metropolitan Development Authority (FMDA) is considering a nearly 7-km-long double-decker elevated corridor to improve connectivity between Greater Faridabad and the Gurugram Road side of the city. Under the proposed design, road traffic would use the lower deck, while Namo Bharat trains would operate on the upper level.

The corridor is also planned to improve movement between the NIT-3 and Sainik Colony areas. The proposal is part of efforts to strengthen east-west connectivity in Faridabad, where the National Highway and railway infrastructure currently create a major physical divide between several parts of the city.

The proposed road corridor would pass through the Sainik Colony area and provide a connection towards the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. At the same time, the Namo Bharat rapid rail project is intended to strengthen Faridabad’s connectivity with other parts of the National Capital Region.

A key feature of the proposal is the use of common pillars for both elevated structures. Officials are examining a design under which the road and rapid rail corridors would be supported by the same pillars between the Hanuman Temple area and Bata Chowk.

Praveen Chaudhary, Chief Engineer at the Faridabad Metropolitan Development Authority, said that certain challenges had emerged because two elevated projects are being planned along the same route. The matter was discussed at a recent meeting, with officials examining how both structures can be accommodated through a common-pillar arrangement.

The state government has also directed officials to speed up infrastructure projects in the city. Work on the Namo Bharat project is expected to gain momentum, while preparations are also underway for the East-West connectivity project.

At present, there is no direct road connection between Greater Faridabad and the Sainik Colony side of the NIT area. The railway line and National Highway contribute to the connectivity gap, making movement between areas such as NIT, Sector 12 and Greater Faridabad more difficult.

Residents travelling between these areas often use the Neelam or Bata railway overbridges to reach Sector 12 and Old Faridabad. The proposed elevated corridor is expected to provide an additional east-west connection and potentially reduce pressure on existing routes.

Separately, FMDA has started widening the service road alongside the Neelam-BK Road. The service lane is being expanded to two lanes to improve traffic movement on one of Faridabad’s important roads.

Construction has already begun, with officials targeting completion of the work within a week. Once completed, the widened road will be opened for traffic.

The revised road arrangement is aimed at easing congestion around BK Chowk, particularly for motorists travelling from Neelam Chowk towards Number One Market and nearby areas.

Under the proposed movement plan, vehicles coming from Neelam will be able to use the service road near the police post at the junction instead of entering the congested section around BK Chowk. This is expected to provide an alternative route for local traffic.

Electricity poles near Punjab National Bank that were obstructing the road-widening work are also being shifted. Levelling work has started as part of the construction process.

The work is being carried out alongside an operational road, allowing traffic to continue using the route while construction progresses.

The FMDA is expected to move ahead with preparations for the East-West project, including the tendering process for one of the proposed routes. Officials will also continue working on the design coordination between the elevated road and Namo Bharat corridor.

If implemented, the double-decker system could create a new east-west transport link for Faridabad while allowing road and rapid-rail infrastructure to share a common elevated structure.
