New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated 2,722 newly constructed government residential flats in Delhi on Sunday and laid the foundation stone for 6,632 additional housing units, marking a major milestone in the redevelopment of central government staff housing.
The newly completed flats are located in Kasturba Nagar and Sarojini Nagar and are part of the government’s General Pool Residential Accommodation (GPRA) redevelopment programme. During the event, the Prime Minister handed over keys to women allottees in celebration of International Women’s Day.
The government is redeveloping seven major GPRA colonies in Delhi, a large-scale project expected to transform ageing government housing into modern residential spaces. Once completed, these colonies will collectively offer 24,917 dwelling units, replacing around 12,970 older residential units.
The upcoming flats will be constructed in Netaji Nagar, Sarojini Nagar, Sriniwaspuri, and Kasturba Nagar, significantly increasing housing capacity for central government employees.
The redevelopment is being executed by the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) under a self-financing model. In this approach, the project cost is partly recovered through commercial developments in the same areas.
Public sector company NBCC (India) Ltd. will generate revenue by developing and selling commercial properties such as World Trade Centre in Nauroji Nagar and Downtown Sarojini Nagar. A similar model was earlier used to redevelop East Kidwai Nagar and Moti Bagh colonies.
Alongside the housing redevelopment, the Prime Minister also laid the foundation for the Bharat Business Park, a modern commercial office complex designed to provide advanced workspace infrastructure.
The project will include approximately 217,000 square metres of commercial office space and is estimated to cost around ₹2,270 crore. The complex will feature energy-efficient and sustainable design elements, aligning with the government’s focus on modern urban infrastructure.
During the inauguration ceremony, Prime Minister Modi interacted with women construction workers involved in the project as well as women employees of NBCC. Later in the day, he distributed Ayushman Bharat cards and PM SVANidhi credit cards to women beneficiaries at an event in Burari, Delhi.
The event was attended by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, and Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, along with other officials.
