Interior designer Gauri Khan transforms her ancestral 1933 Dalhousie villa into an exclusive six-bedroom luxury retreat, blending heritage charm with modern comforts for private stays in the hills.

  • Nearly century-old family estate restored with heritage sensitivity

  • Six-bedroom villa available for private bookings in Dalhousie

  • Entire property priced at around ₹1.2 lakh per night

Gauri Khan has breathed new life into her ancestral hill property in Dalhousie, converting the 1933 estate into an exclusive luxury retreat now open for private stays.

Named The Chestnut Grove, the six-bedroom heritage villa has been part of her maternal family for nearly a century. Originally acquired in 1933 by her great-grandfather, Suraj Bhan Tiwari, the estate belongs to her maternal uncle, Tejinder Tiwari, and has hosted generations of family gatherings and summer holidays.

Spread across approximately 8,000 square feet, the property carries deep personal significance for Gauri. The designer, known for crafting celebrity homes including her own iconic Mumbai residence Mannat, approached the restoration as more than a professional project. For her, it was a return to childhood memories shaped by misty mornings, pine-scented air, and evenings by the fireplace.

When plans for renovation began, Gauri worked closely with her cousin Rustam Tiwari to ensure the original character of the home remained intact. The goal was clear: preserve the heritage soul while introducing contemporary luxury.

The restored villa now features a sunlit living room with expansive glass windows that frame the surrounding greenery. A grand fireplace anchors the space, creating a cosy setting during Dalhousie’s colder months. Wooden textures, earthy tones, and soft lighting enhance the nostalgic charm without making the interiors feel dated.

Each of the six bedrooms has a distinct personality while staying rooted in hill-station aesthetics. Wooden ceilings, subtle stone elements, and muted furnishings create understated elegance. Guests can choose from garden-facing rooms, a spacious king suite, or an attic suite tucked among the treetops.

The dining area, illuminated by a skylight, remains bright throughout the year and blends rustic architecture with thoughtful modern detailing.

The Chestnut Grove is designed primarily for families and close-knit groups seeking privacy in the hills. Individual rooms are priced between ₹15,000 and ₹25,000 per night, depending on the season. The entire estate can be booked exclusively for approximately ₹1.2 lakh per night.

With this project, Gauri Khan adds another milestone to her design journey, transforming a personal legacy into a curated luxury experience. The restoration not only preserves a piece of family history but also offers travellers a rare opportunity to stay in a nearly century-old heritage home reimagined for modern living.
