Delhi PWD to Develop 4 Dust-Free Model Roads Under Anti-Pollution Plan

In a pilot initiative to tackle road dust and air pollution, Public Works Department Delhi will redevelop four stretches in Delhi, with plans to expand the model citywide if successful.

  • Four pilot roads to be fully paved with greenery and dust-control measures

  • 160 km of PWD roads to be upgraded in 2026 at a cost exceeding ₹400 crore

  • Mechanical sweepers, water tankers, and sprinklers to boost daily dust suppression

New Delhi: In a fresh push to curb rising air pollution, the Delhi government is preparing to convert four busy road stretches into completely dust-free “model roads.” The project, led by the Public Works Department (PWD), is designed as a pilot and could be scaled up across the capital if results meet expectations.

Officials said the selected roads will undergo comprehensive redevelopment, including pothole repairs, wall-to-wall paving, landscaped central verges, and extensive greenery. Road shoulders will also be fully paved to prevent loose soil from turning into airborne dust.

The initiative is part of a much larger plan to upgrade 160 kilometres of PWD roads between January and December 2026. Alongside this, nearly 85.7 kilometres of roads have been earmarked for intensive plantation and landscaping work this year. The combined cost of these efforts is expected to cross ₹400 crore, according to government estimates.

Earlier this month, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta chaired a high-level review meeting to fast-track measures aimed at controlling road dust and improving air quality. Addressing the strategy, officials confirmed that underground utility ducts will be installed beneath redeveloped roads to avoid repeated digging, a major contributor to dust pollution. Tenders for the model road works are expected to be floated shortly, with a target completion timeline of one year.

Beyond road reconstruction, the PWD is also launching two supporting projects to strengthen daily maintenance. The first will deploy 70 mechanical sweeping machines and water tankers for regular mechanised cleaning. The second involves placing 250 water sprinkler machines across key corridors to suppress dust on a routine basis.

Government data shows the scale of the challenge: around 3,300 kilometres of roads across Delhi need reconstruction or upgrades. Of this, nearly 800 kilometres fall under the PWD, about 1,200 kilometres under the Municipal Corporation, and close to 1,000 kilometres lie in unauthorised colonies.

Officials said the four model roads will act as test cases for an integrated approach—combining engineering upgrades, greenery, and mechanised cleaning. If the pilot proves effective, similar dust-free standards could soon be applied to more roads across the city, marking a significant step toward cleaner air and smoother urban mobility.
