Delhi Launches Digital Farmer Registry with Geo-Mapped Land Records

Delhi government aims to digitize farmer identities and agricultural land records, improving transparency, eliminating discrepancies, and streamlining crop insurance, subsidies, and financial assistance for farmers.

  • Digital surveys to replace traditional crop inspections for accurate verification

  • Enhanced transparency for subsidies, crop insurance, and government compensation schemes

New Delhi: The Delhi government has announced a major initiative to digitize its agricultural framework, introducing a digital identity system for farmers alongside geo-mapped records of all farmland in the capital. The move aims to improve transparency, reduce discrepancies, and ensure that benefits reach genuine beneficiaries.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the initiative will address long-standing issues such as fake claims, forged documents, and inaccurate land records. “This system will provide farmers with proper identification, rights, and transparency, strengthening the delivery of benefits across crop insurance, minimum support price, subsidies, and compensation schemes,” she noted.

Under the ‘Special Assistance to the States for Capital Investment’ program—a Union government scheme—farmers will receive financial support directly from the Centre. Funds will be disbursed in phases, tied to the achievement of defined targets, rather than as a one-time grant.

The Delhi cabinet has approved signing a memorandum of understanding with the Centre to develop the complete digital mapping of agricultural land. A digital crop survey will replace traditional manual crop inspections, or girdawari, for the first time in the city. Each field will be geo-located with an accuracy of up to 20 meters, and crop photographs will be linked to satellite maps to create verifiable records.

These digital maps will be hosted on an online platform, giving farmers easier access to benefits while enhancing accountability and transparency. Officials say the initiative will improve the efficiency of government schemes and incentivize timely reporting and accurate documentation.

Experts believe this digitization drive could serve as a model for other states, ensuring fair and timely distribution of subsidies, insurance, and other agricultural support, while modernizing India’s urban agriculture practices.
